You can experience a lot on this tour, and in many different ways.
With open eyes, the culture of three nations is unmistakable, as are the various mixed forms at the country's borders. Interesting landscapes ranging from high mountains to hilly country, from rugged cliffs and spruce forests to Mediterranean deciduous forests. The streams, rivers and lakes invite you to linger. Slovenia's gastronomy is very diverse, so there is something for everyone. From seafood to game dishes.
You would like to do the tour more often to experience everything. Once is not enough.
An eventful day full of impressions has come to an end. We now have a lot to talk about.
Kilometers: | approx. 310km |
Travel time: | approx. 5 to 6 hours |
Road conditions: | asphalt |
From Tröpolach, head towards Villach to the Italian border at Thörl-Maglern. Continue to Tarvisio (Untertarvis). In Tarvisio turn left to the Slovenian border. Past Kranjska Gora to Jesenice. Cross this town. After the traffic circle (approx. 1 km) at the traffic lights, turn right to Lipce or the highway. Drive under the highway and turn right towards Bled. The road leads in serpentines to the village of Kotcna. Stay on the road, cross the Radovna River and continue towards Vintgar, keeping to the right until you reach the crossroads with a sign for Bled.
Now continue on this road to Bled. At the crossroads in Bled, turn right and head south along the eastern shore of the lake. In Bled you should take a break and enjoy an excellent "Cremeschnitte" (specialty from Slovenia). A very interesting and winding road leads through the Sava Bohinjka valley to Bohinjskabistrica. From here you should include the approx. 6 km long road to the lake. It is a scenic experience.
In Bhinjska Bistrica, turn left, or if you are coming from the lake, continue straight on towards Skofjaloka or Tolmin. The road first heads briefly south and then turns north and west , climbing and winding up the mountain. The first few kilometers are not very easy to drive. At the crossroads, stay right towards Tolmin. This route is new and is a pure pleasure up to Bohinje Sedlo (saddle 1,277m above sea level).
From there, the road is just as winding downhill in a beautiful landscape. At the crossroads, we keep right again or straight ahead towards Tolmin. In Petrovo Bredo it's the same again, towards Tolmin. The valley we are now riding through is very narrow. There is only just enough space for the river, the winding road and the railroad. The few villages seem to cling to the slopes. Some are close to the road. Sometimes you have to drive around them.
Once we reach Boca, we are now in the Idrjca valley and have to turn right at the crossroads. In a few kilometers we reach Most na Soci. In the village we turn right towards Tolmin. The road there leads along the Soca reservoir. You could spend some time in Tolmin. We cross the village and continue to the traffic circle (approx. 1 km after Tolmin). Leave the traffic circle on the right in the direction of Kobarit.
There are two options in Kobarit:
1. Through the village and on towards Bovec or
2. Turn off before the village and take the bypass to Bovec
The road through the Soca Gorge is a real experience. In Zaga, just before Bovec, we turn left towards the Ucja Pass, which we reach after a few kilometers. There is a special feature here. The Slovenian customs office is several kilometers away from the Italian customs office. After the Italian customs office, turn right towards Uccea. (You can also continue straight on and ride over the Passo dei Tanamea to Tarcento and on via Genona to home).
We turn off in the direction of Uccea. From Uccea we take a narrow road to a mountain pasture and over the Carnizza Saddle or Resia Pass into the Resia Valley to Resiutta. Here we turn right and return to Tröpolach via Pontebba and the Nassfeld Pass.
