Sauris is located in the province of Friuli. The population still speaks a dialect that originates from Old High German (German language island). This "quaint language" is still in use today and you only have to listen carefully to understand some of the words.
The villages of Sauris sopra and Sauris sotto are very well-kept, the houses are renovated and decorated with flowers. Culinary highlights include the ham and the local brewery with its excellent beer.
We won't forget this motorcycle tour in a hurry, as we were thrilled by the impressive sights.

We drive from Tröpolach to Kötschach, turning left over the Plöckenpass to Italy. A few kilometers after Timau you reach the junction on the right to Sutrio and drive over a mountainous road to Comeglians. From there, head south briefly to turn right into Valle Pesarina. This mountain valley is very lovely, with small villages, a winding road and very little traffic.
Immediately after Sauris, you come to Lago de Sauris, a reservoir. Continue through the adjoining Lumien Gorge and through some rough-hewn tunnels to Ampezzo. Here we turn left onto the state road towards Villa Santina and Tolmezzo. In Tolmezzo, at the traffic circle, continue in the direction of Carnia.
Attention: In Carnia, do not drive onto the highway (green sign).
Continue in the direction of Tarvisio, where you reach the Moggio junction after a few kilometers and turn left over the Fella river. From Moggio, through the Val d`Aupa - a narrow, wild valley - and over the Sella dei Cereschiatis, you reach Pontebba. From there, you return to Tröpolach via the Nassfeld Pass.
Over several passes, winding high valleys and wildly romantic landscapes, you reach the starting point again.
