The 3 countries tour

You can experience a lot on this tour, and in many different ways.

If you keep your eyes open, the cultures of three nations —as well as the various hybrid forms found along the national borders—are impossible to miss. Diverse landscapes range from high mountains to rolling hills. Rugged cliffs, dense spruce forests, and Mediterranean deciduous forests offer impressive views. Streams, rivers, and lakes invite you to linger. In Slovenia, the culinary scene is very diverse, so there’s something for everyone—from seafood to game dishes.
You’d love to take this tour more often to experience it all. Once is simply not enough.

Motorcycle tour description

From Tröpolach, head toward Villach to the Italian border at Thörl-Maglern. Continue on to Tarvis (Untertarvis). In Tarvis, turn left toward the Slovenian border. Pass Kranjska Gora and continue to Jesenice. Drive through the town. After the roundabout (about 1 km), turn right at the traffic light toward Lipce or the highway. Drive under the highway and turn right toward Bled. The road winds through hairpin turns to the village of Kotcna. Stay on the road, cross the Radovna River, and continue toward Vintgar; do not turn off the road, but keep to the right until you reach the intersection with the sign for Bled.

Now continue along this road to Bled. At the intersection in Bled, turn right and drive south along the eastern shore of the lake. In Bled, you should take a break and enjoy a delicious “Cremeschnitte” (a Slovenian specialty). A very interesting and winding road leads through the Sava Bohinjka Valley to Bohinjskabistrica. From here, you should take the approximately 6-kilometer-long road to the lake. It’s a scenic experience.

In Bohinjska Bistrica, we turn left—or, if coming from the lake, continue straight ahead toward Skofjaloka or Tolmin. The road first heads south for a short distance and then turns north and west, climbing and winding up the mountain. The first few kilometers are not in very good condition. At the intersection, we stay to the right toward Tolmin. This stretch is new and is a pure delight all the way to Bohinje Sedlo (pass at 1,277 m above sea level).

From there, the road is just as winding downhill in a beautiful landscape. At the crossroads, we keep right again or straight ahead towards Tolmin. In Petrovo Bredo it's the same again, towards Tolmin. The valley we are now riding through is very narrow. There is only just enough space for the river, the winding road and the railroad. The few villages seem to cling to the slopes. Some are close to the road. Sometimes you have to drive around them.

Once we arrive in Boca, we’re now in the Idrjca Valley and need to turn right at the intersection. In a few kilometers, we’ll reach Most na Soci. In town, we turn right toward Tolmin. The road there runs along the Soca Reservoir. It’s worth spending some time in Tolmin. We drive through the town and continue to the roundabout (about 1 km past Tolmin). At the roundabout, we take a right toward Kobarit.

In Kobarit, there are two options:
1. Drive through the town and continue toward Bovec, or
2. Turn off before the town and take the bypass to Bovec

The road through the Soca Gorge is a real experience. In Zaga, just before Bovec, we turn left towards the Ucja Pass, which we reach after a few kilometers. There is a special feature here. The Slovenian customs office is several kilometers away from the Italian customs office. After the Italian customs office, turn right towards Uccea. (You can also continue straight on and ride over the Passo dei Tanamea to Tarcento and on via Genona to home).

We turn off in the direction of Uccea. From Uccea we take a narrow road to a mountain pasture and over the Carnizza Saddle or Resia Pass into the Resia Valley to Resiutta. Here we turn right and return to Tröpolach via Pontebba and the Nassfeld Pass.
