The Sauris Tour 2
Sauris is located in the province of Friuli. The population still speaks a dialect that originates from Old High German (German language island). This "quaint language" is still in use today and you only have to listen carefully to understand some of the words.
The villages of Sauris sopra and Sauris sotto are very well-kept, with renovated houses adorned with plenty of flowers. In terms of cuisine, the ham is worth mentioning, as is the local brewery, which produces an excellent beer.

Motorcycle tour description
We drive from Tröpolach to Kötschach, turning left over the Plöckenpass to Italy. A few kilometers after Timau you reach the junction on the right to Sutrio and drive over a mountainous road to Comeglians. From there, head south briefly to turn right into Valle Pesarina. This mountain valley is very lovely, with small villages, a winding road and very little traffic.
Just past Sauris, you’ll come to Lago di Sauris, a reservoir. Continue through the adjacent Lumien Gorge and through a few roughly hewn tunnels until you reach Ampezzo. Here, we turn left onto the state highway toward Villa Santina or Tolmezzo. In Tolmezzo, at the bypass roundabout, we head toward Carnia.
Attention: In Carnia, do not drive onto the highway (green sign).
The route continues toward Tarvisio, where, after a few kilometers, you reach the Moggio turnoff and turn left across the Fella River. From Moggio, through the Val d’Aupa—a narrow, rugged valley—and over the Sella di Cereschiatis, you reach Pontebba. From there, the route leads back to Tröpolach via the Nassfeld Pass.
After crossing several passes, winding high valleys, and wild, romantic landscapes, you’ll have reached your starting point again.
