Motorcycle tour description
We ride from Tröpolach to Rattendorf/Jenig, where we turn left and head toward Kötschach. There, we turn left again until we reach the Lesachtal intersection, where we turn right. The Lesachtal is the first stretch that a cyclist should really enjoy. There are endless curves and plenty to see. In Maria Luggau, for example, there’s a monastery with a basilica—and all this in a small mountain village. Here, we also leave Carinthia and head into East Tyrol.
The Gail River has its source at the Kartitscher Sattel (1,530 m above sea level). We’ve reached the highest point. From there, the winding road leads to Tassenbach in the Puster Valley; after a few kilometers, we turn left at Anras. We are now on the “Pustertal High Road.” There are several opportunities to turn off into the valley, but we recommend riding the entire route all the way to Leisach. The scenery, featuring the Lienz Dolomites, is breathtaking. Just before Assling, there’s a wildlife park worth visiting. You’re so high above the valley that it feels as though you’re traveling by plane rather than by bike.
Caution: The early exit options can easily tempt you to take an exit. If you don't want to use them, always make sure to take the correct route at the intersections. It is clearly marked as a scenic route.
In Leisach, we turn back onto the federal highway and head right toward Lienz. In Lienz, at the roundabout, we turn right again and continue through the city toward Carinthia. In Oberdrauburg, we turn right over the Drau Bridge and drive over the Gailberg Pass to Kötschach. From there, we turn left onto the Gail Valley federal highway and head back to our starting point, Tröpolach.
