Motorcycle tour description

We drive west from Tröpolach to Kötschach–Mauthen and over the Plöcken Pass (1,360 m above sea level) into Italy. Passing through Timau and Paluzza, we reach the turnoff to Sutrio on the right. Here we turn off and continue through Ravascletto to Comeglians. At the intersection, we turn right at an acute angle heading north and continue through Rigolato and Forni Avoltri to Sappada.

Just before Sappada (Bloden), you reach the highest point in this valley (Cima Sappada, 1,290 m above sea level). You’ll already come across field and stream names in German or the Bloden dialect. High above Sappada, on Monte Perolba—on the Austrian border —the famous Piave River has its source.

We continue through the Piave Gorge, past San Pietro, to Santo Stefano di Cadore. Here at the intersection, we turn right through Comelico toward Kreuzberg—Monte Croce (1,636 m above sea level). We are now in South Tyrol and, traveling through the Sextental Valley, reach the town of Innichen in the Puster Valley. At the intersection, we turn right again, crossing the border into East Tyrol, and continue on to Tassenbach. Now we turn right, cross the Drau River, and climb the mountain to the Kartitscher Saddle (1,530 m above sea level). The Gail River has its source at this saddle, at the so-called “Tannenwiese.”

We drive along it until we reach Carinthia “auf der Wacht.” Passing through Maria Luggau, Lorenzen, Liesing, Birnbaum, and St. Jakob, we wind our way through the Lesach Valley. From Kötschach-Mauthen, we reach our starting point, Tröpolach, after 25 km .
